How to season cast iron or carbon steel cookwares before use?
Cast iron and carbon steel cookwares rust easily, seasoning helps to creat a protective layer that coats and protects the surface from rusting, it also provides a non-stick layer for cooking. If you want to season your new brought cookware, make sure that the protective coating which coats the surface is removed. You can do this by the help of a scrubber. Then begin this seasoning process as below:
1. Cleaning: Add a dash of detergent and some water into the cookware, use a non-metallic scrubber to scrub the inside. Then pour off all and rinse through running water.
2. Drying: Dry with paper towels, then place over medium heat until dry.
3. Applying animal fat or oil: Apply lard or vegetable oil on the surface of the cookware with a pad, repeat this process if needed.
4. Heating: Heat the cookware again to bond the fat or oil to the metal.
5. Ready to use now.
After long time use, this protective coating will turn black, no worry, you are enjoying its best quality now.
