Chili bean sauce, also called hot sauce, pepper sauce, chili sauce, or Doubanjiang, refers to any variety of spicy sauce made with chili peppers and other ingredients. There are many varieties exist and usually classified by the peppers that added.

In American and Southwestern cuisine, people often call it hot sauce, which is made from chili peppers, vinegar and salt, serves as an excellent dipping sauce for almost every meal.
However, the Chinese hot sauce, also called "doubanjiang", is quite different from the common type, which is American in origin. Doubanjiang is made from fermented board beans, soy beans, salt, rice, and other seasonings, in fact, it comes in two categories, the plain and spicy one, both of which are commonly used as a dipping sauce or in stir-frying. "Pixian doubanjiang" is a famous chili bean sauce in China, people like add this into stir-fries, noodles, or rice, and it gives a delicious kick to any meal. You can find "Pixian doubanjiang" in any Asian grocery stores.
